The case of Charles Cullen, a nurse who confessed to killing over 40 patients in nine different hospitals has shocked the public and caused hospitals to examine their hiring practices. As hard as it is to believe, this is not an isolated incident. Over 90 nurses and other health care professionals have been prosecuted for serial murder of patients in their care in 20 different countries. This workshop will provide an overview of the statistics on the types of healthcare providers who have been prosecuted, the methods used, the number of suspicious patient deaths associated with each convicted healthcare provider, and the type of hospital unit that the murders occurred on. Profiles and motives of serial killers in hospitals will be discussed along with case studies of some of the more high profile cases. Often these cases come to light when unusually high clusters of cardiopulmonary arrests occur in a particular patient unit. Intravenous injection is the most common method used. Strategies to prevent murder and assault in the clinical arena and how to collect evidence if a crime is suspected will be covered.
